LOWE, Thomas (1844 – 1895) - A Blacksmith's Tale

Thomas Lowe was a blacksmith who lived in Wrexham. Records for the last four years of his life show that, in 1891, he was living in Trevor Street with his family, and that blacksmithing was his line of work. He was living with his wife Esther, whom he married in 1867, and two children - Lucette Annie, and Harry, who survived him on his death on 15 February 1895. Neither Thomas nor Esther were Wrexham-born. Thomas moved to Wrexham with his family from Bestford Square in Shrewsbury. Prior to that, he'd married Esther in Madeley: and before that, he'd lived in Dawley, Shropshire, where he'd learned his blacksmithing trade. Thomas and his wife had interesting relatives: Thomas's father and namesake had been a gamekeeper, and Esther of Bishops castle was the daughter of a mason and bricklayer Richard Nicholas, and the sixth child, with five elder siblings. Blacksmithing was not the most lucrative business at that time for Thomas. When Thomas died, he left effects of £43 7s 2d. His son Harry chose not to follow in his father's footsteps, became a baker, and followed a much more lucrative line of work, to the point where he left effects of £5459 19s 7d on his death in 1956.
