HARRIET EDITH BOWMAN 1891-1921 Harriet Edith Hughes was born 17 September 1891 in Wrexham, she was the daughter of Thomas Hughes and Alice Lindsay who married in 1885. Before she was born Thomas and his family are in Wrexham Fechan in 1891, this is the Salisbury Road area, he is 29 and from Sealand and is a glass merchant, Alice is 24 and is from Chirk. There are two other children Florence Margaret aged 4 and Albert Edward just 11 months old. Harriet Edith was born later that year. Little Albert Edward died at the fever hospital in September 1896; he was just 6 years old. On 27 February 1897 Harriet`s father Thomas died at Blacon House, Regent Street, he was still a glass merchant. Effects £646 4s 6d Her mother Alice remarried to Charles Edward Hickman in 1899 at Liverpool; he was 28 and a commercial traveller. He was born in Hardingston, Northampton. Alice was 31 and her father is named as John Lindsay a retired superintendent of police. By 1901 they are 46 Salop Road, Charles Edward Hickman is now a glass merchant, and perhaps he had taken over the business. Harriet is there now aged 9, and also Charles Adnitt Hickman aged 5 months, sadly little Charles Adnitt died aged 18 months and was buried on 8 April 1902. Poor Alice has lost two children and her husband within 6 years. By 1911 Charles is a bar fitter, working for himself. Only Alice and her father John Lindsey are there, he is retired, and we can see he was born in County Down. Harriet Edith is a nurse in the Hospital Service in 1911. She is working at the Birmingham & Midland Ear, Nose & Throat Hospital in Edmund Street which had opened in 1891. On 9 June 1916 she married Percy Edward Bowman at St Giles in Wrexham, but sadly Harriet died aged just 29 at Derby Road, Brynteg, she was buried on 20 April 1921. PERCY EDWARD BOWMAN 1887 – 1968 Percy Edward Bowman was born in 1887 at Knolton, Overton his parents were Alfred Bowman and Mary Elizabeth Richards. In the 1911 census he is missing, but Percy A. Bowman aged 24 and a mechanic is on a passenger list - New York to Liverpool. He arrived 13 December 1911 on the Campania, of the Cunard Line. By 1912 Percy Edward has gained his certificate to be first mate on a foreign going steamship and by 1914 he has qualified as Master in the Merchant Service. He was a Lieutenant in the Royal Navy Reserves when married Harriet in 1916. After her death in 1921 he married again in 1923 to Evelyn Cadman. They had 2 known children, in 1939 Percy Edward is in Birkenhead, he is a garage proprietor, meanwhile Evelyn is at home in Acton Gate, Wrexham. Percy Edward died in 1968 in Wrexham aged 80.
