RICHARD BROWN AND HIS FAMILY

RICHARD BROWN AND HIS FAMILY Richard Brown was born in Carno, Montgomeryshire about 1839, his wife Elizabeth Williams was born about 1838 in Llanfyllin, they were married in 1864 at Llanfyllin. In 1871 the family were living at Llansanfraidd Pool where Richard was working as an agricultural labourer, they had two children William and Ellen. They moved to Wrexham and by 1881 Richard had found work as a maltster, the eldest son William 14 was an errand boy, Ellen 12 was in school and by now they had two more children John Henry 4 and Meredith Allen who was just 19 months old, They were living in Meifiod Place and stayed there for quite some time, Richard didn`t stay in the beer business but went back to being a labourer, John Henry became a saddlers apprentice, they had another daughter Leah Ann who was born in 1883. In 1890 Leah Ann Brown was given a prize of 5s for good attendance, her brother Meredith Allen Brown received a prize of a book for 2 years running, both went to the National School, so Richard made sure his children were well educated. Richard died on 20 January 1899 at Mefiod Place, Elizabeth moved to Albert Street; John Henry was working from home as a harness maker, so he had gained his qualifications in the trade. Meredith Allen was also working at home as a baker and confectioner, none of the other children were there. What happened to Leah Ann is a mystery, the burial register states she died in the Workhouse on 10 April 1906, but she is entered as Annie, her death registration is also as Annie, but she hasn`t been found under either of these names after 1891. It`s possible she was ill as the Workhouse was also an infirmary. Elizabeth, John Henry and Meredith Allen later moved to Birch Street and by 1911 neither sons had married. Elizabeth moved away and died on 27 May 1920 at 43 Alma Street, Blackburn, she was brought back to Wrexham and buried with Richard and Leah Ann. Meredith Allen died in Kirkham, Blackpool in 1927, he was buried with his parents on 16 July 1927. John Henry married Jean Dorothy Pritchard in 1913, she died in 1938 in Benjamin Road , John Henry was still working as a harness maker, he died in the Emergency Hospital in Wrexham on 7 September 1947 aged 70. He was still living at Benjamin Road, and left effects of £814 2s 4d. None of the other children have been traced. Researched by Annette Edwards. October 2018. Grave ref: Wrexham Cemetery A-00007
